Our homes exceed LEED standards to help us live lightly on the planet and conserve energy
LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, which provides a standard for the development of multi-family housing construction that is currently considered the “gold standard” of “greenness” rating for residential construction.
A LEED-accredited professional conducted his analysis and concluded that Touchstone achieved a score of 46.5 points, well above the minimum requirement of 38 points. Some of the points were achieved as a result of: • Having the units built modularly • Being Energy Star compliant • Having below average size homes • Clustering the homes to maximize open space • Having a fragrance policy (benefit to Indoor and outdoor air quality) • Not using an irrigation system • Using non-invasive plants • Rainwater harvesting
An independent test concluded that Touchstone homes, which were designed to meet or exceed Energy Star standards, met the challenge. An Energy Star rating requires a score of 85 or below in an energy audit. Our units scored 77 and 73.
WHAT IS IT LIKE TO LIVE HERE? Can you imagine living where you know all the neighbors? In our community a neighbor will loan you a car, take you or pick you up at the airport, cook dinner when you are ill, take you shopping or to the hospital. Our children play safely in our off-road “street” and have many friends. Three times a week we can eat a home-cooked dinner in our common house for $5 or less. And we live in a beautiful setting with ponds, prairies and woods.
"Cohousing provides a sense of safety and the feeling that you are part of a large family who will always be there for you. I love the fact that we are a multigenerational community and that there are so many people with "expert" knowledge about gardening, computers and many other things right at my doorstep."
